Play-Doc has its origins in Tui, a town of just 16,000 inhabitants on the banks of the Miño river, on the border with Portugal. Over the course of its 13 editions it has succeeded in becoming one of the most outstanding events in the independent documentary film scene. It has recently been selected by the Best Fest Film Series association in New York as one of the 10 most important events in the world of documentary film.
The festival began in 2005 with the intention of creating a meeting point for viewing and reflecting on international non-fiction cinema, and also to offer a meeting point for the Novo cinema gallego (New Galician cinema).
This weekend the directors of the festival, Sara García and Anxo Sánchez, will be in Tabakalera to present four films that will be screened on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday there will be a triple session, with two feature films and a short film. The first film, to be screened at 18:00, will be East of Paradise by director Lech Kowalski, one of the the festival’s most emblematic films. The second session, at 21:00, will consist of a short film that was shown in the section dedicated to the Galician cinema within Play-Doc 2017, A Rapa das bestas by Jaione Camborda Coll, and one of the premieres from this year’s festival, the winner, Ama-San (2016), by Cláudia Varejão. On the second day, on Sunday at 18:00, there will be a screening of a film from the retrospective that the festival dedicated to the Canadian director Dominic Gagnon, Hoax Canular (2014). All the sessions will be attended and presented by the directors of the festival.
